The Prado in Manila

As part of the annual celebration of El Dia del Libro, the Instituto Cervantes is bringing The Prado Museum to Manila for an exhibition.

One of the main features of our Día del Libro will be the inauguration of the exhibit “The Prado Museum in The Philippines”. Displaying more than 50 life-size reproductions of masterpieces from The Prado Museum in Madrid, this exhibit represents a unique opportunity for passers-by to experience a face-to-face encounter with works of some of the greatest masters from the 12th to the 19th centuries in the form of high-definition photographic prints.
The exhibit also pays tribute to the Philippines’ very own Juan Luna in celebration of his 160th birth anniversary with his Cleopatra. The painting, a silver medalist in the 1881 Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Exposition of Fine Arts) in Madrid, has since then been in the custody of The Prado along with other works of Luna.

The Prado was the very first museum I’ve seen in Europe, and it’s still my favorite today. I went there in 2014 on my second day in Spain, which was my birthday. The girl who went with me was someone I met during the walking tour I joined in my hostel, and we’re still friends today even though she’s based in Canada.

This event really takes me back. I had wanted to go to Spain this year because the lineup for Primavera Sound is awesome, but it’s just not possible. So glad, that Spain is coming to me through this event!
